Vancouver is known for its dynamic tech sector. But have you ever wondered about opportunities or career entry points into the sector for those of us without a tech background?

Join this informative SFU alumni panel event, in which HR and Education specialists with diverse connections to the tech sector will share how they succeeded in building a "non-tech career in tech" and provide pointers about opportunities at their respective companies.

Samantha Ng, BBA‘ 16

HR Generalist at Safe Software

Samantha Ng is an HR Generalist who is passionate about building connections and emphasizing the "human" aspect of Human Resources. Over the course of her early career, she's gained diverse experience working in post-secondary, professional services and high tech organizations to build her repertoire of skills in recruitment, payroll, employee relations, change management, and more. Currently, she supports the end-to-end recruitment function at Safe Software where she helps to bridge people and their potential in the growing tech sector in Surrey, BC. Outside of the office, you'll usually find her hiking a mountain, hanging out at cool coffee shops, or getting her hands into something crafty!

Hannah Deplaedt, BBA‘ 18

HR Business Partner at Absolute Software

Hannah is a HR Business Partner working in the cyber security industry at Absolute Software. Skilled in employee relations, recruitment, communication, teamwork, and leadership. Educated CPHR candidate with a Bachelor of Business Administration (concentrations in Human Resource Management and International Business) from the Beedie School of Business at Simon Fraser University. Passionate about people, travel, hiking, and field hockey.

Paula Brunton, MBA‘ 09, BBA‘ 01

Director of Consulting Services, Higher Education at Traction on Demand

Paula has worked in the technology sector since 2000, when she held a Developer co-op position while getting her BBA. Shortly after graduation in 2001, she found a love for leadership and has had the opportunity to build and work with teams across products and services in several tech companies. Having worked in the nonprofit and education sectors since 2001, she has a deep passion for bringing innovation that meets the needs of the higher education community. Paula holds a Master of Business Administration (Management of Technology) from the Beedie School of Business at SFU and is currently the Director of Consulting for Education at Traction on Demand. She is also a member of the Business Technology Management Board at SFU Beedie.

Judy Liang, BBA (Hons)‘ 16

HR Generalist at Alida

Judy is currently a Human Resources Generalist at Alida (formerly Vision Critical). During her time at the company, she worked on areas such as full-cycle recruitment, global onboarding, compensation, metrics & reporting, policy design, program management, and employee engagement. She has also participated in key business transformations over the last four and a half years, ranging from acquisitions to a company rebrand. She graduated from the Beedie School of Business in 2016 with a Bachelor of Business Administration, concentrating in Human Resource Management and Marketing. She participated in various student engagement activities, completed four co-op work terms, and did an academic exchange to Singapore during her undergrad.
