Designs and develops new software products or major enhancements to existing software and/or application programs. Researches and integrates design strategies, product specifications, development schedules, and user expectations into product capabilities. Uses software development technologies and tools to build, test, and maintain product modules, components, and subsystems. Utilizes knowledge of one or more platforms and operating systems, and of programming languages such as C and C++. Addresses problems of systems integration, compatibility, and multiple platforms. Performs feasibility analysis on potential future projects to management. Works with customers and technical staff to resolve problems with software and responds to suggestions for improvements and enhancements. Acts as team leader on projects and coordinates project schedule and teams. Participates in development of software user manuals. May provide product demonstrations and participate in trade shows and seminars. May interact with customers, vendors, and external development partners. Utilizes specialized depth and breadth of expertise in discipline or function; individual contributor recognized as a subject matter expert. Solves a full range of complex problems. Interprets internal/external issues and recommends innovative solutions and/or best practices. Provides advanced analytical support to management team. Leads projects or project steps of varying size and has accountability for ongoing activities related to projects. Represents work unit or cluster in meetings. May participate in industry/knowledge reference group(s). May step in for manager during an absence. Coaches, mentors and/or trains less senior colleagues. Serves as trusted resource for management.


Position Summary


AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges) is a not-for-profit association dedicated to transforming health care through innovative medical education, cutting-edge patient care, and groundbreaking medical research.  AAMC IT is beginning a multi-year modernization of its large product portfolio into an API based digital platform while transitioning from on-premise to Amazon Web Services (AWS) .  AAMC IT strives to deliver innovative solutions and superb service that enable amazing experiences, impactful strategies, and new insights for the AAMC community and staff. The Lead Software Engineer is responsible for the design, development, and support of applications that enable the AAMC’s service programs and processes for medical students and schools.  The Lead Software Engineer will collaborate with business and IT colleagues to assess needs, document requirements, analyze solutions, create prototypes and implement re-engineering of, enhancement to and production issues fixes of a portfolio of applications.  He or she will work with quality assurance team members to ensure the proposed solution meets functional and performance requirements.  He or She will also be responsible for mentoring IT team members so there is a balance between enabling junior developers to grow in their areas of responsibility and providing technical oversight for development activities and project deliverables.



If a bachelor’s degree is required, related work experience may be substituted in some positions.  One year of college course work at an accredited institution is equivalent to one year of related work experience.
