Substructure Technologies is a social impact technology startup based in Austin, TX. We work directly with local governments to build human-centered technology that allows civic servants to understand data, make better decisions, and help the community they serve.

We are currently working on technology that helps Housing Departments collect data from affordable housing properties, verify affordable housing compliance, and then use that data to make better decisions to support the community.

We are looking for a Lead UX/UI Designer in Austin, TX that can work with us on a new project as a remote, part-time contractor. This person will be responsible for leading the Discovery and Design phases of the project. User Centered Design is an important part of our company culture and we’re looking for someone who can continue to contribute to it and improve it.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct interviews to understand the workflows, pain points, and desired outcomes of our users and stakeholders
  • Create user requirements for our technology that will meet the needs of our users and stakeholders
  • Design mockups in Sketch that meet user requirements
  • Create clickable prototypes in InVision that can be tested with users
  • Test clickable prototypes with users, collect feedback, iterate
  • Manage communication with stakeholders through email, phone calls, and meetings

Experience

  • Designing high fidelity mockups in Sketch
  • Creating clickable prototypes in InVision
  • Creating journey maps and user personas
  • Working with small teams of less than 5 people

Skills

  • Great communication and presentation skills
  • Knowledge of User Centered Design concepts and processes
  • Works autonomously with limited direction
  • Ability to lead all UX/UI efforts on a project
  • Ability to adapt processes and deliverables to meet deadlines
  • Open minded to changes in processes or deliverables
  • MVP mindset
  • Detail oriented; especially when it comes to visual design

Bonus

  • Experience working with local government or other social impact organizations
  • Experience working directly with a software development team
  • An understanding of government affordable housing programs
  • Experience with advanced graphic design and digital art

Additional Details

This is a part-time contract position. 10 - 20 hours a week is estimated for February, March, and April. Subject to change. Although this is a part-time contract position, we do have some possible upcoming projects. We would ideally like to find someone that would be open to longer engagements, and possibly full-time work, in the future. This is a remote position, however we are looking for someone who is based in Austin, TX. We expect to have about one weekly meeting in person. Most interviews / meetings with the users / stakeholders will take place over Google Hangouts.
