We have an exciting opportunity for a Web Designer to join our Science Visuals Department. Reporting to the Web Content Strategy Manager and working closely with the department’s Design, Photography, and Graphics teams, as well as with other departments at Science/AAAS, you will be responsible for executing web designs from concept to final hand-off. The ideal candidate will be able to transform project requirements into designs. You will have superior visual design skills, with an emphasis on designing with users in mind.

What You’ll Do

  • Create sketches, wireframes, mockups, and prototypes to communicate user interaction ideas and designs for webpages and user interface elements, including input controls, navigational components, informational components, and containers
  • Present mockups and prototypes to key stakeholders and coordinate with development team and others as needed to move projects and designs from ideation to completion
  • Establish and promote web and web design guidelines, best practices, and standards
  • Design and produce weekly features and other content as needed, including occasional special packages and immersive visual stories
  • Design and produce promos highlighting content on the website and in newsletters
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Interaction Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or similar field
  • Background or interest in science or science journalism a plus
  • At least 2 years of experience in related field
  • A proven background in web design, with an emphasis on UX/UI design
  • Knowledge of SEO best practices a plus
  • Familiar with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines a plus
  • Familiar with content management systems, such as Drupal and WordPress
  • Familiar with wireframe and design tools, such as Figma, InVision, Sketch, or Balsamiq
  • Proficient in Adobe CC, including Photoshop and Illustrator; InDesign a plus
  • Proficient in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
  • Work well under pressure, multitask, and adhere to tight deadlines
  • Must be detail-oriented, organized, and a good communicator
  • Be able to take direction well, and work both independently and collaboratively
