Harmony Labs is on a mission to create a world where media systems support democratic culture and healthy, happy people. We do this by building communities and tools that can reform and transform media systems.

In the last year, we’ve built a Narrative Observatory that harnesses powerful industry relationships and an academic research network to deliver content strategists insights into values-based audiences, story risks and opportunities as they come and go in culture, and the narrative structure of media. At the core of the Narrative Observatory are opt-in internet and television panels touching 300,000+ U.S. people and offering a minute-by-minute view into the content they care about, wherever they consume or create it. To these data, we join terabytes of text content data across online news, TV news, entertainment TV, advertising, social media, and music, as well as public opinion survey.

The Engineering Director will engage with external partners, drive decisions on all technical matters, coordinate collaboration between Engineering and other teams within Harmony Labs, and directly oversee the Engineering team itself.

The Engineering Director will take on the following roles and responsibilities:
• Organize and manage technical projects, identifying clear objectives and ensuring their completion
• Recruit and manage a team of Software and Data Engineers
• Develop and implement policies, standards, and procedures for the engineering and technical work performed in the organization
• Direct, evaluate, and confirm software and technical infrastructure design and changes
• Explore and implement technical infrastructure and software solutions
• Coordinate with external data, development, and research partners
• Cooperate with all Directors on policies and projects across the organization
• Design and direct implementation of technical infrastructure, data storage, and software



• 8+ years active software development experience
• Ability to effectively manage teams of engineers, especially remote employees
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Expertise with with technical architecture, cloud computing environment management, and software engineering
• Experience managing integrations with multiple external partners
• Expertise implementing technical infrastructure within cloud computing environments
• Familiarity with core data science concepts and tools
• Experience supporting an in-house data science team

We’ve worked on climate, gun violence, political corruption, artificial intelligence, and other issues, and recently reported on LatinX and Black online audiences. The outputs we’ve created with partners include websites, presentations, peer-reviewed publications, white papers, toolkits,
curriculum, insights decks, and media. Our work has been covered in the press, like in this Wired article.
