Overview

We are looking for an Information Accountability Analyst to join our Media and Democracy team. This is a critical role that will play a key part in our pioneering efforts to combat online disinformation intended to confuse or intimidate voters and undermine the public’s trust in our elections.

Our Information Accountability analyst will work collaboratively with teams across Common Cause as well as several partner organizations and our network of volunteers to analyze and combat disinformation, represent us in our coalition work, draft reports and share findings with partners, and support our work to center communities most affected by disinformation.

This role will report to the Director, Media & Democracy, and is based in Washington, DC with an expectation of coming to our office at least two times per week. We hope our new Information Accountability Manager will start in June!

Responsibilities

Monitor, analyze and prioritize reports of disinformation
  • Track and analyze reports of disinformation from multiple sources, including social media monitoring tools, organizers, volunteers, grassroots groups, and public tiplines
  •   Determine appropriate response for each report, based on criteria defined with the Director of Media and Democracy
  • Maintain our collaboration database with daily updates of disinformation examples, adding additional context and other metadata to submissions and connecting tips together to show bigger picture narratives
  • Submit damaging disinformation content to relevant social media platforms and request removal
  • Track what content has and hasn’t been removed to help ensure platforms are consistent with their own policies and are held accountable
Create compelling written communications to support our Information Accountability work
  • Create rapid-response Threat Reports and related materials for Common Cause and our coalition allies
  • Produce a weekly newsletter on key disinformation narratives in the democracy space for our partners, funders, media, and other stakeholders
  • Create memos and presentations describing the democracy disinformation landscape for partner groups and members of the media
  • Create public-facing memos and presentations cataloguing the extent of anti-democracy disinformation and platform failures to enforce terms of service for partner groups and members in the media

Collaborate with our partners
  • Assist partner organizations as needed, for example: provide technical expertise on analyzing location and issue-specific disinformation; craft response messaging; provide trainings on how to use and monitor social media for potential threats; etc.)
  • Assist in media exposés and platform advocacy by providing evidence of terms of service violations
  • Liaise and collaborate with anti-disinformation projects at partner organizations

You will thrive in this role if you have:

  • A strong commitment to Common Cause’s non-partisan mission and to advancing racial equity through our democracy agenda
  • Ability to analyze large amounts of information and content, and create actionable insights

  • A track record of working collaboratively with others
  • Critical thinking skills and a resourceful approach to problem-solving
  • Deep familiarity with Microsoft Office, Slack, Zoom, as well as various social media platforms (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, etc.) and a willingness and excitement to learn new tools; experience with social media listening tools is a plus
  • Strong writing skills
  • Experience giving trainings or presentations to compel large groups to action
  • Strong organization skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and comfort with multiple and shifting priorities
  • Openness to feedback and awareness of your own strengths and areas for growth

The following is required:

  • Demonstrated expertise in researching, analyzing, and responding to disinformation narratives, ideally focused on strengthening democracy, or at an organization focused on one of our issue areas (for example, voting rights)
  • Ability to work out of our DC office at least two times per week, and ability to travel 1-2 times per year for team and/or all staff retreats
  • Per our non-partisan policy, Common Cause staff members may not currently be in elected office (or running for office); on the Steering Committee or Finance Committee for any political candidate; or affiliated with the leadership of a political party
