What is One Project?
One Project is a nonprofit social venture. We're building the infrastructure for a new kind of economy — one that benefits everyone. Communities worldwide are already creating alternatives to outdated economic systems that prioritize profit over people and the planet. One Project provides the technology and nurtures the network of alternatives, laying the groundwork for a sustainable, community-driven future.
Why do we need a new economy?
Today’s current economic systems reward profit over people and the planet. This misaligned incentive structure drives the current global polycrisis. When trees are valued more dead than alive, we end up with ecological devastation. When oil remains profitable to extract and sell, we end up with the climate crisis. When war is more profitable than peace, we end up with a military industrial complex that thrives on endless wars. At One Project, we spent our first few years researching these interlinked challenges and realized that we need to address the root cause: we need a new economy with different incentives.
Our history and role
We are not alone in this realization. All around the world, there is a growing ecosystem of communities, movements, and experts who are already working towards a just transition to a new economy. We launched in 2021 with a focus on listening to and supporting these change-makers, and today, One Project is a leading grantmaker in the new economy space ($32M to date). Our current direction is the outcome of what we heard from more than 300 field leaders, dozens of leading organizations, and extensive in-house research: One Project’s role is to build shared infrastructure and a network to move resources to community control. We call this infrastructure Common.
What is Common?
|
Common is a digital platform that connects people, organizations, and resources to coordinate and grow economic democracy to global scale. |
The Opportunity
We're seeking an experienced Product Marketing Manager to help grow Common, the community-owned infrastructure for economic democracy. As our Product Marketing Manager, you'll help scale a platform that enables grassroots organizers, cooperatives, unions, and municipalities to coordinate resources and decisions democratically. You'll drive adoption strategies that transform how communities build economic power together.
This role requires someone who can translate the complexity of economic democracy into joyful, accessible experiences while maintaining authenticity with movement organizers and credibility with institutional partners. You'll be responsible for positioning Common as the platform that makes economic coordination easy and effective - turning the old extractive systems obsolete through better product.
What You'll Do
Core Product Marketing (60-70%):
- Shape product positioning and develop audience-specific value propositions, ensuring Common resonates across our "Three Horizons of Growth" - from grassroots organizers to unions/coops to municipalities
- Lead go-to-market initiatives for product launches—owning the entire process from positioning strategy to execution at scale, coordinating across product, engineering, community, and communications to deliver concrete, measurable outcomes
- Design and execute activation strategies, campaigns, and programs (like the People Powered pilot) that drive daily engagement, identify and activate power users early, and become compelling case studies
- Build engagement scoring models and implement A/B testing frameworks across onboarding sequences—measuring everything from "vision-focused vs. action-focused" messaging to social proof strategies
- Partner with community stakeholders including participatory funds, cooperative networks, and co-design partners to ensure messaging reflects movement authenticity while maintaining institutional credibility
- Collaborate with product managers and train team members on how to talk about the product, creating decks and materials for advocacy efforts
- Execute user research initiatives including interviews with ecosystem leaders from key focus organizations. organizations like Sustainable Economies Law Center and United States Federation of Worker Coops
Brand and Marketing Activities (30-40%):
- Craft marketing campaigns learning from platforms like Wikipedia, Discord, and GoFundMe that made infrastructure feel personal first
- Create case studies and success stories that demonstrate network multiplier effects, time saved, and money moved - making economic democracy tangible through concrete metrics
- Develop strategic email marketing programs that keep users engaged and informed
Experiences You Might Be Marketing:
- The joy of democratic decision-making where governance feels like improv jazz rather than parliamentary procedure
- Onboarding flows that transform complex economic democracy concepts into "Democracy without the doctorate" - accessible to anyone in minutes
- Community discovery features that create "you should meet..." moments and smart recommendations that inspire immediate action
- Trust and endorsement systems that build solidarity without creating hierarchies
- International accessibility features ensuring global movements can coordinate regardless of regional terminology or technology access
You may be the candidate we’re looking for if you bring…
- Demonstrated product marketing experience in environments where product marketing is valued and well-practiced - you’ve seen strong models in action and can guide team members in building their marketing muscle.
- Proven track record with consumer-facing GTM strategies and product launches – you’ve developed campaigns based on consumer-driven insights and delivered measurable outcomes across online and offline channels.
- Data rigor and analytical excellence - you’ve built engagement models, implemented A/B testing frameworks, and driven decisions with quantitative insights.
- Builder mentality and comfort with ambiguity - you thrive creating programs from scratch, are skilled at managing from ideation to execution, implementing with detail-oriented precision from strategy through scale.
- Excellent communication and storytelling abilities—you can make complex concepts accessible, avoid both corporate jargon and activist rhetoric, and speak authentically to diverse audiences from grassroots organizers to municipal decision-makers.
- Cross-functional collaboration skills—you’ve partnered effectively with teams across all management levels and with both internal and external stakeholders.
- Service-oriented mindset—you understand your role as translator of product vision and genuinely care about community building and getting people to return and use the product.
- Coach and enabler - you enjoy training teams on product messaging and positioning, with the shared goal of helping everyone communicate the product's value effectively.
At One Project, team members bring our values to life when they:
- Drive clarity by connecting work to purpose and help others understand the "why" behind decisions.
- Support teammates' success as readily as their own, sharing knowledge and pitching in across boundaries.
- Communicate directly with empathy, giving and receiving feedback in service of growth.
- Actively seek diverse perspectives and create space for others' unique strengths to shine.
- Build trust through consistent follow-through and transparent communication.
- Find creative solutions by embracing nuance and moving beyond either/or thinking.
- Deliver excellence through careful work, measurable results, and continuous improvement.
